Melanesia (from Greek, meaning “black islands”) is a region extending from the western side of the eastern Pacific to the Arafura Sea, north and northeast of Australia. It consists of 2,000 islands with a total land area of about 386,000 square miles (one million square kilometers), and is home to about 12 million people.

Melanesia includes the islands of New Guinea, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, Maluku Islands, Torres Strait Islands and Fiji. The islands of Melanesia are typified as being high volcanic islands with dense tropical rainforest. The Melanesian people are intensely tribal and there are believed to be over 1,300 languages.
